Q&A
Q&A: Should I keep funds in a savings certificate or money market savings? Choosing the right type of savings account can be confusing. It ultimately depends on the specific objective you have for the cash and your need for access. Here are a few points for consideration: • A money market savings is a good option if you have a large sum of money that you may need easy or immediate access to. A money market savings may be best in a rising rate environment since dividends rates often rise as market rates do. • A savings certificate usually has a higher yield than a money market savings because you are locking the money in for a set period of time and the longer the term, the higher the rate. There is usually a penalty if you withdraw the money early. In a rising rate environment, it may make sense to get several shorter-term certificates and roll them into longer term certificates with a higher rate when they mature.
